Gerard Asselta, 64, of Vineland was pronounced dead at the crash scene north of Tuckahoe Road and Harding Highway in Franklin Township, police said in a statement.
The single-engine craft took off from a residence on Union Road in Vineland and crashed about1 p.m., police said. It was not clear where Asselta was headed.
Earlier reports said the single-seat aircraft crashed about a quarter mile from Downstown Airport.
Asselta was the only person aboard.
Footage from ABC News Chopper 6 showed scattered remains of the yellow craft in woods along the roadway.
